OR Conference OverviewCommunity education is a way for people to enhance their lives as well as their communities and schools through learning and collaboration. It is a concept that provides opportunities for state and local community members, schools, and other organizations to become partners in addressing educational and community concerns. Community schools are an integral part of the delivery system for community education. By linking schools and community, community education is raising the odds for the development and sustainability of flourishing communities, for increasing strong community school partnerships, and for providing the important ingredients necessary for families and children to thrive and learn. Program AreasThis year we will be focusing on five areas: Community School Leadership; After-School Programs; Life Long Learning; Community Building; and, the role of Higher Education and Research. Under each of the areas, we are looking for presentations that that demonstrate best practices in developing community education programs and partnerships, including community schools; that provide knowledge and tools on assessing and strengthening communities and building social capital; and, that strengthen relationships among diverse groups of people. We also would like to distinguish, when appropriate, between urban, suburban and rural and beginning and veteran levels. Community School LeadershipIn this area, we want proposals that will give participants the knowledge, tools and strategies to help them become effective collaborative leaders and to better understand how to bring together diverse school and community members in an effort to create communities that thrive.
After-School Programs and ProcessIn this area, we are looking for proposals that deal primarily with K-12 extended day programs, including federally funded 21st Century Community Learning Center programs, and others. We are interested in covering both start-up and ongoing programs and programs that have found ways to become selfsustaining. Presentations can be overviews of programs or focused on program components including but not limited to:
Life Long LearningIn this area, we want proposals that focus on programs and services for community members of all ages, including opportunities for intergenerational interaction.
Community BuildingIn this area, we want proposals that focus on building and strengthening informal and formal resources and structures to help a community recognize its common values and its potential to work together to everyone's benefit.
Higher Education and ResearchIn this area, higher education institutions who are defining a role for themselves in community education will be encouraged to share their methods and results. A research focus will also provide an opportunity to become aware of significant research findings. (Abstracts for poster sessions are welcome — see website for more information: www.ncea.com.)
ParticipantsWe seek participants from a broad spectrum of national and international organizations; local affiliates; education; business and industry; social and health services; voluntary organizations; community service agencies and organizations; and parent and student groups.
